2108 Lafayette a three-story Second Empire House built in 1877 by Jacob Christopher.
He occupied it from 1877 - 1893

Jacob Christopher, the president of The Christopher & Simpson Architectural Iron and Foundry Company, whose offices and foundry were located on Park avenue, from Eighth to Ninth streets, was established in 1873. Jacob was born October 11, 1827, in France, just across the line from the city of Strassburg. His father was a farmer, and when Jacob was six years old they came to the United States and settled in New Orleans. After remaining there for a short time, they moved to Louisville.

Jacob moved to St. Louis in 1850. In 1873 he started his own business on a small scale and associated with W.S. Simpson, under the name Christopher & Co., and in 1882 the firm was incorporated as above, Mr. Christopher becoming the president of the new company.

The career of Jacob has in every way been a creditable one. When he first left school, he was compelled to work for a livelihood and to be content with very small wages. He was never , however, so poor but he was able to save a trifle, and by practicing strict economy he succeeded in amassing sufficient capital to start his own business. His career was one of steady progress. He was a prominent member of the board of Improvements of Lafayette Park; also a member of the Union Club.

Jacob was married in 1858 to Miss Harriet Simpson, of Ohio, yes that would be his business partner's sister.

2108 Lafayette: 1974 - 1998

2108 Lafayette was purchased in 1974 by John R. Greene (Kirby). He made extensive restoration efforts to salvage the original character of the house. Pictured to the right, the house had been unoccuppied for many years after being used as a boarding house.

After working on the house for over 2 years ourselves, Julie and I are very thankful for his efforts. Some of the notable items: stripping the majority of the wood work on the first floor, replacing the spindles in both sets of stairs and many other countless efforts. I have scanned in photos that he gave to us, they are pictures of the house when he first took on this project in 1975. As pictures do not show the true condition of the house, I am truly amazed with his efforts.

2108 Lafayette: 1998 - present

On October 21st, 1998, Julie and I purchased a three-story Second Empire House built in 1877, located at 2108 Lafayette Avenue right across the street from Lafayette Park. It needed lots of work to make it our home, thus we have been busy ever since. I put together this web site to share our progress with our family and friends.
